the first line in a book

Why I Write
Sometimes it escapes me and I find myself wondering why I write,,, then I remember why.
I write because first and foremost I am a writer; maybe not a published writer,,,, yet anyway. I am a writer where it counts, in my heart, in my head and therefore the rest does not matter, making a penny off it does not matter to me as the writing itself.
To be honest, I'm not comfortable letting somebody in on my writting until I am ready, until I am sure it is perfect, or as close to it as I can make it.
Is my book even semi close to being ready for anybody to read??? Not unless you can read my mind, no. It is not ready to be read.
See, I am going to let you in on a little unknown secret of mine; I AM STRANGE! I AM NOT WIRED CORRECTLY. Oh, wait, I meant to say that is a well known secret of mine. LOL!
Of course I would say that is because I am a writer, or perhaps I am a writer because of it.
Writting has gotten me though a lot of tough times in my life, without writing; I would probably be locked up in a mental institute somewhere. Although I've never written personally until recently, (too many snooping eyes), it's always for the most part gotten me out of my head, out of reality and it's always been there, always there to comfort me, always there to let me feel what I need to feel.
It's been a trusted companion, confidante and friend even when I am alone.
That is why I write!!!
About My Book
Anyway, let me get on with it. I am not one who can write this book from page one to the end, I have been writting her so long, I know the main events she goes through, (this is the first chance I have had to get her onto computer but everytime I try, something happens to it). What I am doing now, is working on making it more eventful, taking situations, everyday situations and twisting them as far as I can but still making it believable. Fine tuning, I guess you could say.
Maybe it would help if I get some of these folders orginized. Oh yeah, another well known secret,,, I am procrastinator from hell.
The First Sentence
Now back to my original thought, the most important part of a book, at least I think, is the first line. It kind of sets the theme, the energy of the book if you will, or at least for lack of a better word.
I had a discussion with another wirtter in another site after I mentioned that in a write that I critiqued. I think it should be abstract in a way. It should mention no characters, nothing directly about the book itself but rather a persons thoughts or,,, I do hope I'm making sense in all my ramblings.
It's just that for me personally, if I read that first line I am either intrigued to read more or I am disinterested in the book altogether.
I guess I'm more curious than anything. Sorry for the rambling.
I will mention one more thing, despite the first line, I do try to endure through the book and see if it surprises me, sometimes it actually does.
Happy writing!!!!

Franki, this itself had a great first line and I always think your a great writer. Thanks for this and good luck with that book! Cheers, Kimberly
you are a writer indeed! let me tell you something funny about myself. Any time I start reading a book I read the last line first. I just can't help myself :-)
Thank you sidney, as do I, as do I. Try as I might I can't help myself either. franki

I agree that it is very important for the first sentence, and then first paragraph, to grab the reader's attention. What is your book about?
